Finishing

Finishing

The finishing stage of the production process brings together the castings and the various small parts produced in the foundry. While castings are taken through blasting and grinding to eliminate surface irregularities, the small parts are brought to a machine shop where threading, tapping, and heat treatment take place. Trained operators constantly inspect all components for obvious defects or imperfections.

As irregularities are encountered, the castings are rejected and re-melted. The inspected castings proceed through various drilling, tapping, or other machining steps, depending on the series being produced, on its way to the final assembly where the wedges and actuating screws are installed. The completed assembly then moves to the paint area where an asphaltic paint similar to that of pipe and fillings is applied.
